The slow, natural drainage of the long-gone prairie has been replaced by tile and storm drains, which directly link land to water.

With each change in Iowa's landscape less water is able to absorb into the ground creating runoff which causes water pollution.

The Big Picture

Everything we do on land affects the quality of water in our creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.  Poor water quality is a reflection of those who live in the watershed. To improve water quality we need to start infiltrating the one-inch rain.

A One-Inch Shift...

Most showers in Iowa are one-inch or less.  This rainfall is nick-named the "first-flush" because it flushes away the pollution on land into our creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.

When we manage

the "first-flush" we

help prevent water

pollution.

The Rain Check

The first step to better water quality is gauging the amount of rainfall your property generates during a one-inch storm.  Answer a few questions and within seconds you'll know how much water you could potentially capture and control.
